Discover the joys of growing your own sweet heirloom tomatoes, plump container potatoes, crisp snap peas, and other gourmet organic produce that are tastier and more nutritious than anything you'll find at the store -- in less than 10 minutes a day and in a space the size of your kitchen table.”

“You'll never have to eat those cardboard-tasting, overpriced, specialty vegetables and herbs from the store ever, ever again!!*”

From the rooftop garden of:
Victoria Gazeley

Dear fellow urban foodie:

Here's a couple of questions for you:

  1. Do you live in an apartment, condo or townhouse with only a balcony, patio or rooftop deck to call your own?
  2. Do you want to easily grow beautiful, nutritious vegetables in containers for yourself and your family and friends, but don't think it's possible in your tiny outdoor space? (At least so you can still enjoy the space without tripping over pots of peas and buckets of tomatoes?)
  3. Are you thinking "I'd love to find a way to grow super tasty organic vegetables, herbs and fruit that look great and taste even better -- but it needs to be easy, fast, no-mess, and chemical-free!"

Think it's impossible, or even simply hard to do?

Then keep reading, because what I've got to tell you will change the way you relate to your tiny outdoor space forever!!

“You CAN grow your own beautiful, delicious,
health-giving produce, whether you have an
80 square foot third storey balcony or a
rooftop deck on the 35th floor."

If you live in the city in an apartment, townhouse or condo, you know the dilemna. You love all that amazing organic produce that shows up at the market in the summer -- the multi-coloured mesclun, the tart French sorrel, the sweet heirloom tomatoes... And, being a fresh food connoisseur, you already know that garden vegetables and herbs picked fresh are way better (and I mean WAY better) for you than their supermarket (or even farmers' market) cousins. In fact, pretty much all the studies agree that veggies and fruit start to lose their vitamins, minerals and especially micronutrients the moment they're picked!!!

But here's something you might not know: most supermarket produce is trucked hundreds, if not thousands of miles, sometimes under questionable conditions, to get to you -- even the fancy organic stuff! Just imagine what they must have to do to those tomatoes to make sure they're still in good shape by the time they get to your grocery store -- they never ripen in the sun and never develop the full range of micronutrients they were meant to. Then they're gassed, possibly irradiated, and handled by people who sometimes don't even follow basic food safety procedures. Not to mention the growing and processing conditions that recently caused numerous people to fall in in the US from eating packaged spinach. Yuck...

7 Things the Conventional Produce Industry
Might Not Want You to Know that Could Be
Directly Affecting Your Health!

  1. A recent installment of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's show Marketplace highlighted (quite explicitly) the fact that many supermarkets aren't following even the most basic food safety procedures - even for fruits and vegetables.

  2. Bagged spinach loses half its Vitamin C in 3 days, and most of its folate and carotenoids less than a week after picking (even under IDEAL conditions). You're eating this stuff for the Vitamin C, and it's almost completely gone by the time you take it home!

  3. Tomatoes grown in the open air have higher lycopene content than those grown in greenhouses or in plastic tunnels -- most grocery store tomatoes are grown in greenhouses or shipped a LONG way to market. You do the math.

  4. Do you buy pre-packaged salad mixes or pre-cut vegetables? How's this for 'EWWWWWW'? Pre-washed salad mixes from supermarkets have been implicated in recent North American outbreaks of hepatitis A, E. coli and salmonella. What ARE they doing to our food before we eat it? I'm not sure I want to know the answer... And not only do you have to worry about acquiring diseases from your food, but you're eating veggies whose Vitamin C levels have plummeted!

  5. Organically grown produce has, on average, 27% more vitamin C, 21.1% more iron, 29.3% more magnesium, and 13.6% more phosphorus at the time of harvest - but it all goes downhill fast the moment the veggies or fruit are picked. So much for paying more for organic produce!
  6. Most of us have diets that are sadly lacking in minerals, so we buy fruit and vegetables to try to make up for our less than healthy lifestyles - but a study commissioned by the Organic Retailers and Growers Association of Australia (ORGAA) recently found that conventionally grown fruit and vegetables purchased in supermarkets and other commercial retail outlets had ten times less mineral content than fruit and vegetables grown organically!
  7. And finally, this one sent me over the edge: more than 20 per cent of federally-tested fresh fruit and vegetables sold in Canada show traces of pesticide contamination, according to the latest data. (If you think this is only a problem in Canada, you're sadly mistaken...

Sources: Mount St. Vincent University; Organic Trade Association; CropLife Canada; CBC Marketplace

The danger of pesticide residues, the uncertainty of food safety, reduced vitamins, minerals, and micronutrients, and substandard flavour -- if there was ever a good time to grow your own
organic vegetables, herbs and fruit, it's now!

I don't know about you, but tomatoes picked weeks before they would normally get sweet and juicy, then hidden from the sun in boxes and refrigerated trucks and zapped with ethylene gas to finally ripen them just don't sound all that healthy to me. Even farmers' market produce has lost a lot of its nutrition by the time you pick it up and get it home (though it's an infinitely better option than the grocery store).

"Is your supermarket charging you an arm and
a leg for organic produce that was picked days, weeks or even months ago?"

So you're buying veggies and fruit that are far from fresh, and probably aren't even all that good for you -- but you'll STILL need to pretty much mortgage your condo to put those babies on your plate on a regular basis! So what's a busy person who loves great food AND wants the best for their body (and tastebuds) to do? Easy - grow your own vegetables in containers.

Sounds simple, doesn't it? But if you've ever tried to find a guide to container vegetable gardening for beginners that was exactly what you're looking for -- one that's easy to read, easy to follow, and pretty much guarantees your success.... if you've walked around your local big box bookstore, or cruised around the Amazon website, stunned by the number of gardening books out there but disappointed that virtually none of them apply to you... I know how you feel. I've done it (many times) and it's incredibly frustrating.

But, after a LOT of searching, I'm here to tell you...

"...you CAN learn how to grow vegetables in a container -- it's simple and EASY! If I can do it
with my crazy work schedule and a four-year old in tow, then I guarantee you can too!"

All you need is a gardening guide specifically designed for busy people like you who live in a condo or townhouse and want the freshest, tastiest and most nutrition-packed produce that can only come from growing your own.

Hi -- my name is Victoria Gazeley. And I must confess, I'm a bit of an organic food snob (sad but true). If it's not absolutely fresh, scrumptious and organically grown (something often more difficult to find than it should be), I really don't want it wandering through my front door. Especially now that I have a little boy. But I've also lived in small apartments the better part of my life, and as much as I dreamed of being able to grow my own sweet heirloom tomatoes, pungent Asian basils and crispy french beans, I honestly never thought I had enough room. Or enough time.

Then I discovered that not only did I have enough time and space to design and grow a container garden -- but it was easier than I'd ever thought. And I'm betting that with the right guidance, you'll find exactly the same thing.

I'm incredibly excited to announce
the upcoming publication of How to start designing a container garden
Gardening on the Edge: The Busy Person's Beginner Guide to Growing Gourmet Vegetables Your Patio, Balcony or Deck

When I couldn't find that definitive guide to successfully growing organic vegetables from my new-at-the-time townhouse deck, I had two choices - either give up and keep spending crazy amounts of money at the market and organic home delivery, or write my own guide. So that's what I'm doing.

With Gardening on the Edge, I'll show you exactly how I've been growing delicious, mouth watering, nutrient packed vegetables and herbs on my rooftop deck -- step-by-step so you can do the exact same things yourself! Plus you'll discover all the time-saving secrets to gardening for busy people AND you'll find it all in one place so you don't have to go hunting all over, wasting that precious spare time that I'm pretty sure you have very little of.

Before you know it, you'll be growing wow-your-tastebuds veggies and herbs whether you're living in a third floor apartment or a 20th floor penthouse. Bottom line -- this lesson-packed how-to guide will show you exactly what you'll need to do to be a big success at growing your first urban food garden. Whether you want to grow container potatoes, or learn where to find space-saving vegetable and fruit seeds, you'll find exactly what you need in Gardening on the Edge.

"With Gardening on the Edge, you'll get
all the information you need to start designing
a container garden full of succulent veggies and herbs -- it's the most complete AND easy-to-use container food gardening guide
you'll find anywhere."

You need information tailored to you -- the busy urban professional. With Gardening on the Edge, you'll get it -- straight up. No hyped-up, fussed-up, overly scientific information. I'll take you step-by-step through the process of designing a container food garden, simply and easily (and quickly!), so you can put it to work on your balcony or deck right away -- even in the dead of winter! (Skeptical? I was too, til I looked on my deck that first year and saw my seedless sorrel merrily growing away even though it was sweater and toque weather).

For less than you'd spend on one weekend dinner at a nice restaurant, Gardening on the Edge will reveal exactly how to grow some of the same ingredients the high-end chefs are using -- on your balcony, deck or patio. You'll be guided, step-by-simple-step, through topics like:

  • Designing your First Container Garden - I'll show you which containers and soil mixes you'll definitely want to avoid and which ones are great value for the money. You'll also learn exactly how to pick the right plants for your space so you'll be a marvel of gardening success your very first time! Growing tips for tomato plants (which ones are tasty and which ones are 'not so good'), whimsical ways to grow container potatoes, where to find space saving vegetable and fruit seeds, how to grow tomatoes upside down in a 5 gallon bucket, the best soil for growing herbs in a barrel and hundreds of other tips and instructions are all yours! As a special bonus, I've included planting and sourcing specifics on some unique vegetables you've probably never heard of that are full of vitamins and phytonutrients AND super easy to grow (and hardy too!).

  • The Mysteries of Container Fertilizing Revealed - Learn the most important nutrients for growing vegetables in a way that won't make you want to run screaming from the room because it reminds you of high school biology class! Find out how to make your own space-saving compost bin (so you can make your own fertilizer for free), as well as how to pick the best of the bunch from the huge, confusing mash of fertilizers and soil amenders you'll see online and in your local nursery. You'll even learn how to brew a very special tea that will have your plants (and your dinner guests) coming back for more - just don't let the dinner guests drink it! My simple system will get you past the initial paralysis that comes with trying to figure out what plant needs what fertilizer when and for how long. You'll never ever forget to feed your plants and you'll be rewarded with perhaps the finest tasting veggies you've ever eaten.

  • The Best Times & Methods to Harvest your Potted Veggies -- You'll discover when to pick and when to leave plants alone, plus how to tell when you'll get the most nutrition and taste from your garden.

  • How to Eat Homegrown from your Deck, Patio or Balcony Way Past When Your Friends Have Gone Back to Eating Supermarket Produce -- Uncover the amazing way you can continue to harvest some crispy veggies right through winter with the veggie varieties and a few simple tools -- no matter what part of the country you live in.

  • Growing the Next Generation - I'll show you the super easy way to save and store seeds from one year to the next, as well as how to grow new baby vegetable plants from seed (it's easy, and it'll save you tonnes of cash). Buying seeds or seedlings? In most cases, there'll be no need after your first year. You'll also learn exactly how to get your hands on plants you'll never, ever find in the regular catalogues and garden centres.

"QUICK TIP... Increase your tomato harvest by using an ingredient you probably have in your bathroom!"

Every week, for every foot of height of your tomato plant, add 1 tbsp (15 ml) of epsom salts to a gallon (4 litres) of water and use it to water your plants. They're packed with magnesium that tomatoes absolutely love! This is a strategy that, even today, VERY few gardeners ever take advantage of.

I've included more than 67 other tips like this in Gardening on the Edge -- so you can grow the most impressive container garden your friends and family have ever seen, cleanly, quickly and with little fuss!

"Think that's all there is? I wouldn't
dream of leaving it at that..."

I've also included:

Little known resources that show exactly where to buy or find all the unique, hardy plants I describe in the book.

Money saving alternatives to expensive fertilizers that you can make at home from things you probably have lying around the condo -- for nothing!

Time saving ideas that will have your friends wondering how on earth you find the time to grow such beautiful produce AND still do all the other things you love.

Customized lists & budgets you can take to the nursery or gardening store so you'll never get caught spending more money than you meant to, or buying plants that will be nothing but a waste of your valuable time.

Fun, stylish project ideas that will make your container gardening experience just that much more hip and memorable.

Exclusive access to downloadable garden planning tools - you won't ever have to try to calculate out when to get all your seeds into your containers before it's too late -- the tools do it all for you.

But most of all, you'll get down-to-earth, practical and 'do-able' projects, tips and advice that won't cost you an arm and a leg and will get you in the tastiest, healthiest and most unique container grown veggies money could ever buy (even if you COULD find them -- and many of these you'll never see in the market). And once you get going, they won't cost you anything but about 10 minutes a week!

If you've got questions like "I need instructions for making compost tea," or "How can I get started growing vegetables in buckets", Gardening on the Edge will cover it all.

"You'll discover Gardening on the Edge is designed specifically for small space container food gardeners -- there's nothing else to get in the way of the information you need."

I know numerous people (including myself, originally) who were turned off growing food in containers as a result of following advice meant for conventional backyard gardens, then ending up with a miserable harvest -- or no harvest at all. That advice doesn't work for gardening in small spaces -- but the tips and ideas you'll find in Gardening on the Edge will - guaranteed.

"And best of all, you can manage the
whole thing in less than 10 minutes a day."

Have you heard people who garden conventionally talk about how much work it is to keep everything up to snuff? Even people who love their gardens will admit that most vegetable plots are a lot of work. Weeding, fighting off bugs and slugs, worrying about sun and wind and rain...

But growing vegetables and herbs in containers is different. With Gardening on the Edge, you'll learn how to grow circles around your conventional-gardening friends, in a tiny fraction of the time they're spending. They really will wonder how on earth you're managing to grow such beautiful produce in such a tiny space -- and still have time to go to yoga and pottery class. They might even think you've comandeered a spot in a house-dwelling neighbour's garden. But you'll know better...

With Gardening on the Edge, you'll be able to
start small and grow a garden as large as you want,
as quickly as you want...

If you don't yet have a garden, or if your garden is small, this guide will give you all the basics for a successful first food garden. And if you already have a container garden but aren't happy with the results you're getting with conventional advice, this will be a blueprint for success that you don't want to be without.

"ANOTHER QUICK TIP... Never have to suffer the social embarassment of ruining your downstairs neighbour's balcony-side dinner with your garden run-off!"

When growing veggies and herbs in hanging baskets, make sure to position the baskets above another pot or planter. This way, the drips from watering will be caught by the plant beneath - the lower plants will get a drink and will save you the embarassment of putting a damper on your downstairs neighbour's romantic evening on the balcony with your garden run-off!

I've included more than 69 other tips like this in Gardening on the Edge -- so you can grow the most impressive container garden your friends and family have ever seen, cleanly, quickly and with very little fuss!

You see, I know what you need to grow your container garden because it's the same things I needed to grow MINE:

You need to grow plants that you'll actually eat -- and that taste great!

You need to be able to go away for a day or two and not worry about your plants keeling over.

You need be able to figure out what to feed your plants without having to wade through tonnes of boring technical data.

You need to be able to do it all in about an hour a week or 10 minutes a day!

I guarantee that with Gardening on the Edge, you'll find out how to deal with all of these situations, successfully, and in less time than you ever thought possible.

Of course, what I can't guarantee is that you won't absolutely fall in love with container gardening and want to spend more time than 10 minutes a day. What I can tell you that you can spend a miniscule amount of time and still get better results than you'd ever imagine. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't actually done it myself.

So let me ask you this:

How would you feel if in just a few weeks you could be well on your way to joining the growing number of urban professionals who call themselves 'gardener' - and growing delicious, healthy organic vegetables on your balcony, deck or patio?

How satisfying would it be to dazzle your dinner guests with fresh bocconcini salad made with your very own vine-ripened, sunwarmed Roma tomatoes and pungent Genovese basil?

What would it feel like to see the look on your dinner guests' faces when you serve them the exact same vegetables the high-end restaurants are serving -- but you could tell them it all came from your balcony at a fraction of the price!

How excited would you be to be able to discover the step-by-step system to growing fabulous organic produce?

I wish someone had asked me the same questions when I was learning about all this - then I wouldn't have had to spend months doing it the hard way...

I've been through this exact process and know how frustrating it can be to have your garden growth slow -- even STOP -- because of bad advice or just inaccurate information for your particular circumstance. Or what it's like to be turned off of food gardening by the mess and hassle that can result from making 'newbie mistakes' (trust me, I made them all!).

That's why it was so important to me that I build a system that absolutely ANYONE can use to grow delicious, great-looking organic produce in the smallest of spaces.
And here's the best part...

With Gardening on the Edge, you'll never be stuck with outdated information - no matter how long you keep using the book!

Unlike other hardcopy or online resources, with Gardening on the Edge you'll never need to worry about being behind the times with regard to container vegetable gardening information.

Once you own Gardening on the Edge, you'll have access to any and all updates that I publish as a result of new experiments of my own and other container gardeners, or breaking research from the container food gardening community. Whether I add new tips and project ideas, or create a whole new section on some hot new culinary vegetable sensation - you won't pay an extra dime… ever!! You'll always be in the loop...

***But there IS a catch -
